Not all directories are free, some will require fees for review and listing services while others will require their link to be reciprocated, but no matter what, it is not guaranteed that your website will be listed. This process is the main reason why backlinks from directories are respected by search engines. Acquiring a link from reputable web directories will definitely help increase your PageRank and the chances of your website in landing at the front page of search results.
